LONDON

When India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently addressed a distinguished gathering of diaspora leaders, professionals, and policy stakeholders at a seminar hosted by the High Commission of India (HCI) in London, it was a special moment for Steffi Fernandes, one of very few Goans at the gathering.

Steffi, founder and strategic lead of the global consultancy firm ‘Estever’, told The Goan that it was an honour for her to be invited to the seminar.

THE SEMINAR

Steffi said the seminar focused on India’s fiscal policy direction, global economic standing, and strategic partnerships with the diaspora.

“It highlighted India’s resilience in the global economy, digital infrastructure advancement, and its call for greater collaboration with diaspora entrepreneurs to co-create impact – economically and socially,” said Steffi.

“There were also discussions around India-UK trade, investment, and emerging sectors for collaboration, a critical platform for global business leaders seeking engagement with India’s growth story.”

“Attending the HCI seminar was a defining moment – not just professionally, but personally. It reaffirmed that vision, when rooted in community and guided by purpose, can create ripples across borders. As a proud Goan-Tanzanian woman leader, I carry forward not just my dream, but the dreams of every girl from a small town who dares to believe that she can shape the world.”

THE IMPRESSION

Steffi said the union finance minister commanded immense respect, not just for her portfolio, but for the grace and strength with which she delivered complex fiscal vision.

“She exemplifies diplomatic poise, policy depth, and progressive leadership, all while championing India’s global ambitions. Her ability to speak to both the macroeconomic picture and the social development agenda was inspiring. As a woman of Indian origin leading impact-driven work globally, I found her journey and leadership to be a motivating force,” she said.

“Her speech and presence made a remarkable impact. It was a powerful and affirming experience that deepened my clarity and conviction around some of the key decisions related to an upcoming project I’m leading – one aimed at creating transformative employment and enterprise opportunities. The insights shared during the seminar came at just the right time and brought valuable alignment to my vision,” said Steffi.

Steffi acknowledged one highlight of the evening which was moving and personal for her.

“It was the sight of Clayton Barretto – our very own Goan – performing duties as Social Secretary to the Indian High Commissioner in the UK,” said Steffi.

“In a gathering marked by diplomatic stature and national significance, Clayton stood out not just for his poise and professionalism, but for what he represented. Seeing a fellow Goan occupy a pivotal role on the global stage filled me with immense pride and emotion.”

“His presence wasn’t just a testament to individual excellence—it was a powerful symbol of our community’s journey, achievements, and the bright future ahead.”

GOAN IDENTITY

Steffi was born in Bukoba-Tanzania, to Goan parents Estelito Domingos Fernandes (Sanvordem) and Verda Fernandes (Quepem).

“My upbringing was rich in cultural values, tradition, and community warmth, with a beautiful blend of African soul and Goan spirit. My father’s bakery in Bukoba was my first window into entrepreneurship and community service. My younger sister, Flavia, is a renowned banker in the UK,” said Steffi.
