Fr Agnel College Pilar launches Book Club on National Librarians’ Day

Fr Agnel College of Arts and Commerce, Pilar, celebrated National Librarians’ Day with great enthusiasm on August 12, marking the occasion with the inauguration of the new Book Club ‘Page_Turners.’

The event in the college library was attended by faculty members, staff, students, and invited guests, reflecting the college’s commitment to promoting a culture of reading and literary engagement.

The programme began with a warm welcome to the gathering by the compere, Associate Prof. Rajashree Sail, followed by a prayer led by Fr Fredrick Rodrigues, officiating principal of the college.

The dignitaries along with the participants paid tribute to the Father of Library Science in India, Dr S R Ranganathan.

The highlight of the event was the inauguration of the Book Club ‘Page_Turners,’ a significant initiative aimed at fostering a love for reading among students. The inauguration was conducted by the Chief Guest, Shailendra Mehta, along with Fr Anthony D’Silva, the College Administrator, and Fr Fredrick Rodrigues.

The College Librarian, Janessa M D’Mello, provided a brief but insightful overview of Dr S R Ranganathan’s life and contributions, drawing attention to his pioneering work that continues to inspire librarians worldwide.

She also introduced the concept and objectives of the newly formed Book Club, ‘Page_Turners,’ highlighting its role in encouraging literary exploration among students.

The programme also featured a brief presentation on the college library by Pratiksha Malik, Grade 1 Librarian, who outlined the library’s resources and services, emphasising its role as a vital academic hub within the college.

Anamika Naik, a TYBA student, captivated the audience with a Hindi poetry recitation.

The introduction of the Chief Guest Shailendra Mehta was handled by Asst. Prof. Cheryl Pinto, who detailed his accomplishments and contributions to the literary and educational community.

A memento was then presented to the Chief Guest as a token of appreciation for his presence and contributions to the event.

The programme continued with a soulful Konkani poetry recitation by Delma Fernandes of SYBA.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Associate Prof. Maria Biula Pereira, Convenor of the Library Advisory Committee.
