The Goa government on Wednesday honoured the parents of the 21-year-old road accident victim Pradhyuman Soni for their decision to donate the organs of their deceased son thus giving a new lease of life to five patients.

The deceased young man was brought to Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim with a critical head injury on November 20 and was declared brain dead in the following days.

With his parents expressing their wish to donate his organs, his heart, kidneys, liver and lungs were harvested and transplanted to patients in Goa, Maharashtra and Telangana. This was the first and successful attempt by the medical teams of GMC and State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) to harvest organs and transplant them in other patients.

Speaking to the media, Dean of Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim Dr S M Bandekar said that the parents of the deceased patient themselves came forward on Saturday with the kindest gesture that they would like to donate their son’s organs.

“Our team from SOTTO followed it up. We could give life to five patients and it was done legally, impartially and as per the national guidelines,” he said.

Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, who honoured the parents, said, “This wasn’t an easy decision for the family. When it is a loved one, you are in a different emotional zone. Their son is now living in five different bodies. The government of Goa is very grateful to Pradyuman’s parents for their courage to donate his organs. I am happy that our team could use these valuable organs and give life to several patients across the country. This is a very humbling moment for us.”
