Six new faces were elected in the seven-member Quelossim panchayat, vowing to oppose the controversial Mini India Park (MIP) project and to safeguard the village from any destructive projects.
While outgoing deputy sarpanch Sebastian Serrao lost the elections, Filomena Figueredo was the only member from the previous body who managed to get elected again.
The winners in Quelossim panchayat were Lopinho Xavier (Ward 1), Filomena Figueredo (Ward 2), Fransisco Xavier Figueredo (Ward 3), Caetano Joe Tavares (Ward 4), Motecina Fernandes (Ward 5), Santana Da Silva (Ward 6) and Swoozie De Souza (Ward 7).
Speaking to reporters, social activist and Biodiversity chairman Lopinho Xavier said the Quelossim panchayat was now in safe hands.
"We have seen that all panch members elected by villagers were the people who opposed the MIP. We are a panel of independent candidates and we will vouch to work against the project tooth and nail.”
“We have also news of many mega projects planned in the village and are in the pipeline. We will not allow any destructive projects in the village and we will safeguard the natural beauty and environment of the village,” said Xavier.
