A mega awareness campaign on alcohol addiction was organised at the Zuarinagar Shelter Home on Sunday morning, with members of Alcoholics Anonymous reaching out to the people on the need for early intervention, counselling and community support to overcome addiction.

The programme focused on educating residents about the harmful effects of alcohol and drug dependence on physical and mental health, family life and financial stability.

Speakers explained how addiction often leads to health complications, strained relationships, job loss and social isolation, stressing that recovery is possible with timely help and sustained support.

Members of Alcoholics Anonymous shared personal recovery experiences, offering hope and encouragement to those battling addiction. They emphasised that alcoholism is a disease that requires treatment, understanding and collective responsibility rather than stigma.

An AA representative Roquezinho D'Souza said, “Addiction silently destroys not only the individual but the entire family. The first step towards recovery is accepting that help is needed. Through mutual support, regular meetings and counselling, many have successfully rebuilt their lives. No one should hesitate to seek assistance.”

The session also highlighted the availability of rehabilitation services, counselling support and helplines for those seeking guidance. Participants were encouraged to speak openly about their struggles and to approach trained counsellors for professional help.

Authorities at the shelter home welcomed the initiative, stating that such programmes play a crucial role in prevention and rehabilitation efforts.

They said awareness at the grassroots level can significantly reduce substance abuse and help individuals reintegrate into society with confidence and dignity.

The campaign concluded with an interactive discussion, where participants clarified doubts and pledged to spread awareness within their communities. Organisers stated that similar awareness drives would be conducted in other parts of the region to promote a healthier and addiction-free society.
