Amid concerns that water levels have dropped at the Chapoli Dam, the lifeline of Canacona taluka, data has revealed that water storage is much better placed at 58.30% as compared to last year's corresponding period.
Chapoli Dam, with a gross storage capacity of 1,122.30 ham, presently has storage of 654.29 ham, which is equivalent to 33.54 Metres of RI (Reduced Level) on Thursday morning.
This storage is slightly above 58.30% and is much higher than last year's corresponding period percentage of 55.26%.
According to the information from the Taluka observatory, last year’s corresponding RL was at 33.12 Mtrs RL on April 4, 2023, with a water storage of 620.22 ham.
A source in the WRD stated that though the heatwave and rising temperatures are a concern and could quickly reduce the water storage, the storage of 654.29 ham at Chapoli dam is very promising and even if the summer is prolonged, there won't be much water shortage at least in Chapoli dam for some more months.
A visit to the dam revealed considerable water in its main reservoir. However, there was a large portion of the earth seen in the northern part of the reservoir, which according to WRD sources, is a normal sight at this time of the year.
