Dabolim flyover project: Cong highlights public hardship

A Congress delegation led by South Goa District President Savio D’Silva submitted a memorandum to the District Collector, Egna Cleetus, IAS, seeking her intervention on the Dabolim flyover issue.

A Congress delegation led by South Goa Congress district President Savio D’Silva called on South Goa district Collector, Egna Cleetus, IAS, to express concern over the flyover construction at Dabolim.
Saying the current situation is causing significant hardship to the people of South Goa, the delegation comprising GPCC OBC Chairman Sharad Chopdekar and Cortalim Block Congress President Peter D’Souza has called for timely intervention and guidance from the District Collector to help restore order, accountability and public confidence in this vital project.
In the memorandum, the delegation pointed out serious issues and public distress caused by the ongoing and now stalled bridge construction work at Dabolim. The situation has reached a point where it demands immediate attention and intervention from the office, they said.
“Firstly, multiple tragic incidents have occurred at the construction site, leading to loss of lives. It is deeply concerning that no adequate safety measures appear to have been taken at such a large-scale public project. Lives could have been saved had proper precautions and supervision been ensured,” the memorandum said.
It added: “Secondly, the condition of the adjoining roads has deteriorated severely due to continuous construction activity. Commuters face daily inconvenience, with roads riddled with potholes, dust and debris. Many vehicle owners are suffering damage to their cars and two-wheelers — assets earned through their hard work. The situation is not only inconvenient but also unsafe for all road users.”
Before taking up a project as large as a bridge, the delegation pointed out that it would have been more practical and considerate if proper service roads and diversions had been developed to ensure smooth transit. Unfortunately, the lack of such planning has created chaos and hardship for the public.
“To add to this, the abrupt halt in construction has raised several unsettling questions. Why has the work stopped midway after so much investment and public inconvenience? What steps are being taken to resume and complete the project? The funds and efforts already spent risk being wasted if no clarity or accountability is provided,” the memorandum added.
