Saligao MLA Kedar Naik has stated that the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has decided to collect garbage from Saligao and Pillerne-Marra villages on a door-to-door basis.
“This decision of the GWMC will reduce the financial burden of Saligao and Pilerne panchayats substantially in collecting garbage and will help the two panchayats to utilise the money for development works of villages. In due course, the GWMC will collect garbage from three other panchayats also,” said Naik.
He was speaking at Pilerne after inaugurating the ‘Boom Barrier’ installed near the Waste Management plant to prevent unauthorised trucks from dumping garbage in the forest area.
ZP member Sandeep Bandodkar, Saligao Sarpanch Lucas Remideos, GWMC Managing Director Harish Hadkonkar and panch members of Saligao and Pilerne panchayat were present on the occasion.
The MLA said there had been complaints from locals that unauthorised trucks dump the sewage and construction debris in the forest area near the waste management plant.
“Sewage and other waste would percolate down the plateau and were polluting wells in the Saligao. Hence, the GWMC installed this boom barrier on the road leading towards the plant to prevent the entry of unauthorised trucks in the forest area,” said Naik.
SWMC MD Harish Hadkonkar said in response to public complaints, GWMC had convened a meeting with the Saligao MLA and panchayat members of Saligao and Pilerne panchayats.
“It was decided to install a boom barrier on the road leading towards the plant and depute security guards to prevent the entry of the unauthorised truck in the plant area. The GWMC has a list of trucks authorised to carry garbage to the plant. Only those trucks will be allowed inside the forest area,” said Hadkonkar.
