A city-based lawyer, Adv Leona Barretto complained to the Margao police that her car was damaged and she faced threats to her life from a group of persons at Calconda-Margao while she along with her client had gone for a site inspection of a structure on Wednesday evening.
Another city-based lawyer, Byron Rodrigues has urged Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to intervene to stop lawlessness and anti-social activities in Margao as he wondered what would be the fate of the common men if lawyers are being attacked and their vehicles damaged.
Adv Byron has threatened to file a writ petition in the High Court and make Margao Police station in-charge, PI Tulsidas Naik a party if the police do not register an FIR and initiate action.
Adv Leona told the media outside the Margao police station that she had gone to Calconda for an inspection of a structure fixed by the SGPDA Member Secretary on a complaint filed against Digambar Sawal, the husband of Margao Municipal Council Dipali Sawal.
Claiming that a group of persons armed with weapons, including iron rods were at the site, she alleged that the group abused and threatened her when she was still inside the vehicle. “The group later damaged the car with an iron rod,” she alleged.
“If people can attack a lawyer at will and damage her property, just imagine what would be the fate of the common man. If a lawyer is not safe, how can the ordinary man be safe,” she questioned.
The lawyers have drawn the attention of the president of the South Goa Advocates Association Prasad Naik about the incident.
When contacted, Margao PI Tulsidas Naik said the police is in receipt of a complaint from the lawyer, adding that the police would initiate action as per the law.
