As the mercury soared to 36 degrees Celsius in Goa on Tuesday, it marked the hottest month on record, surpassing even April’s temperatures.

Moreover, this rise in temperature is expected to persist for the next two days, until Thursday, with Goa’s maximum temperature already recording 2.1 degrees Celsius above normal.

Amidst relentless heat, the State also experienced isolated rains accompanied by thunderstorms, particularly in the interior regions.

“The dry, hot air is being carried from the southern parts of India and transported to Goa, Maharashtra, and Karnataka regions. This has led to the increase in temperature, making May the hottest month in Goa,” explained IMD official Nahush Kulkarni, while speaking to The Goan.

In addition to Goa, the Konkan and Saurashtra regions, as well as Gujarat witnessed temperatures above the seasonal average on Tuesday. “The dominance of wind is expected to reduce after two days, but until then, there is no relief from the heat,” he added.

The minimum temperature on Tuesday also remained at 28 degrees Celsius, which is 1.5 degrees Celsius above normal. "Hot and humid conditions are likely in isolated pockets over North and South Goa on May 14-15. No large change in maximum temperature for next three days. No weather warning on May 18," reads the forecast issued by IMD.

Canacona, Sanguem, Quepem, Dharbandora, Ponda, Salcette, and some northern areas including Pernem, Sattari, and Bicholim, received rainfall accompanied by gusty winds during the evening hours.

The IMD Goa has also issued a yellow alert until May 17 as rainfall with thunder and lightning is expected, followed by light rainfall until May 20.
