As the protest against the construction of a bhandara across the Zuari River at Mirabag Sanvordem entered its 20th day today, the agitators — comprising a majority of women from the village — were left dismayed as they were compelled to celebrate the first day of Shigmotsav, the village’s major festival, at the protest site where they have been sitting continuously for the past twenty days.

With no response forthcoming from the government and the villagers having vowed to continue their agitation until they receive a clear assurance that the project has been withdrawn from the village, the protestors said they have no option but to remain stationed at the site without any break. The uncertainty surrounding the proposed project has only strengthened their resolve to intensify the agitation.

The aggrieved villagers strongly criticised the government and also took a swipe at a local MLA, without naming him, for allegedly proposing the bhandara in the village without seeking the consent or authority of the residents. They alleged that the project poses a serious threat to their homes, agricultural fields and overall livelihood.

Traditionally, it has been the custom in the village to prepare and serve food to Shigmotsav warriors who visit on the first day of the celebrations. However, this year, the women protesters prepared the festive meal at the protest site itself, as they could not return home to carry out the customary cooking and hosting. The sight of festival preparations at the agitation venue reflected both their cultural commitment and their determination to continue the struggle.

The women protestors expressed anguish over what they termed as the government’s indifferent attitude towards their concerns. They also voiced disappointment over the absence of local representatives, criticising them for failing to make their presence felt in the village and stand in solidarity with the agitating residents during this crucial period.
