The Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) has claimed that its unique benefits can enable it emerge as a multimodal hub and become a part of the ambitious PM Gati-Shakti National Master Plan.
In a press note, the MPT said the Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the Centre would launch a Rs 100 lakh crore 'PM Gati Shakti Master Plan' to boost the manufacturing sector and infrastructure that will generate employment opportunities for the youth.
The National Master Plan is scheduled to be launched on October 13.
The MPT stated that ports as a service industry provide facilities for both Exim and Domestic sector and MPT would also rise up to expectations in achieving the goals of the ‘Gati Shakti Master Plan’.
“MPT is unique in comparison to other ports on several fronts. Other ports may not have such fully established barge operations as in MPT. No port may have 4-Lane exclusive road connectivity to an international airport within 7-8 kms and no port may have cargo movement via rail unloaded to barge and moved on waterways,” stated the MPT.
“The Mormugao Port, one of the oldest ports on the West Coast constructed in 1888 and declared as a Major Port on December 2, 1963, enjoys an enviable position among major ports as it is well connected to the hinterland and to major cities via road, rail, waterways and air.”
The MPT said it has set its vision to diversify into a multi-commodity handling port.
“Multimodal connectivity, excellent cargo handling facilities, high productivity, streamlined administration and a dedicated workforce all go towards making this port one of the most efficient on the Indian subcontinent.”
“With all these attributes, Mormugao Port has tremendous potential to cater to the needs of trade and industry, and to contribute to the economic development of the nation.”
The port presently has 11 berths for cargo handling and two berths for handling cruise vessels. In addition, there are six Mooring Dolphins to handle direct ship to barge cargo operations.
