MARGAO
Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has said the fire incident at New Market in Margao is another warning alarm of ticking bombs at various locations in Goa.
“It is high time that the government and the citizens realise danger that lies ahead and take corrective steps. Road obstacles for fire brigades, lack of equipment to fire fighters once again came to fore today,” stated Yuri.
“I am continuously raising the issue of ill preparedness of the Disaster Management Authority as well as fire & emergency services. Government is functioning with outdated vehicles which are used by Fire Department as water tankers to extinguish fires. Some of the vehicles are more than 20 years old. One of such vehicle is almost 25 years old and still kept in operation, pointed Yuri.
Making a plea to the citizens to take a serious note of this incident and take the necessary corrective steps, he said the haphazard parking around the market area in Margao, internet and television cables crisscrossing the roads, open electrical junction boxes and wires and storage of firecrackers in shops adjacent to cloth shops are major threats for causing fire.
