Despite the Feast of St Francis Xavier having ended on December 3, the fair has stayed put and this has resulted in mounting garbage in and around Old Goa.
When The Goan visited Old Goa on Tuesday, it was seen that people continued to throng the fair to buy stuff.
However, the garbage has remained uncollected ever since the feast ended and waste has accumulated in many places, giving the area in and around the fair a dirty look.
The situation was particularly of concern near the Gandhi circle as garbage bags were seen dumped and the area was stinking.
Sources informed The Goan that the feast fair is supposed to be dismantled after December 4.
“However, the stalls continue to stay put to conduct business, which results in garbage accumulating in and around the area. It is becoming an annual affair and authorities concerned should ensure that the fair winds up after December 4,” the sources said.
When contacted, Old Goa Sarpanch Janita Madkaikar said the fair continues even after the deadline of December 4 and it has been going on for many years now.
"Stall owners do not listen to us when we ask them to dismantle the stalls as people throng the fair to make last-minute purchases," Madkaikar stated.
When asked about the mounting garbage, the sarpanch assured that the panchayat would clear the garbage.
