Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar has raised serious concerns over the dominance of non-Goan operators in the paragliding and adventure tourism sector along the Arambol-Paliem-Keri-Terekhol coast, alleging that most of them operate without adhering to safety protocols.

Following a tragic paragliding accident on Saturday that claimed the lives of a 26-year-old Pune resident and a pilot, Arolkar reiterated his long-standing opposition to these activities.

He stressed that almost all the operators involved in paragliding and allied services are from neighbouring States and do not employ proper safety measures.

“These activities are being carried out by non-Goans who blatantly disregard safety protocols. I have been opposing these illegal operations for the last two years, yet for some reason, they continue to thrive,” Arolkar stated.

The MLA revealed that he had previously raised the issue with the Tourism Minister, resulting in the department halting the issuance of licenses to paragliding operators. Despite this, the activities persisted illegally.

“I had informed the minister about these illegal paragliding and parachuting activities. The tourism department stopped granting permissions,” Arolkar said but could not explain how these operators continued without licenses.

The recent accident has brought adventure tourism along the Arambol-Keri-Terekhol coastal belt to a halt.

Arolkar emphasised that the suspension or permanent ban on these activities would have little to no impact on locals, as nearly all operators are outsiders.

“We are not affected if these activities are permanently banned. None of the locals are involved in them,” the MLA said.

The illegal activities, concentrated mainly in the villages of Arambol, Paliem, and Keri, pose significant risks, Arolkar said, adding, “I will not tolerate this any more. If such activities continue illegally, more accidents are bound to occur. I will ensure these operations are completely stopped.”

The tragic accident has reignited debates over the regulation and safety standards of adventure tourism in the region, with local authorities under pressure to enforce stricter measures.
