PANAJI
Motorists suffered severe difficulties as the authorities shut down a lane, converting the Ribandar-Panaji causeway road into a one-way after a small section caved in on Monday morning.
The road is a crucial link to the capital city for residents of Ribandar, Sao Pedro and Bainguinim villages, although the new highway between Merces and Old Goa is also available as an alternative.
The Panaji-Ribandar causeway is a Portuguese-era structure built over marshy flood plains along the banks of the Mandovi river. Built in the 17th century, it is 3.2 kilometers long and has ducts for tide control.
Public Works Department (PWD) engineers are already on the job assessing the damage and preparing the plans to repair the small portion that has caved in, officials said.
