Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Monday introduced an amendment to the Goa Private Universities Act in a bid to vest the powers of the land acquired with the university and ensure that it is not used for any other purposes besides academic and research.

The Bill also seeks to consider only non-profit making companies to be the sponsoring body of a private university. It also proposes that in case the adequate numbers of eligible candidates belonging to reserved categories are not available, the same should be filled with candidates from unreserved categories.

The Bill further says that the University should be set up on a land-owning or leased out for a period of 30 years with an area of not less than 50,000 sq mtrs.

“The land and other movable and immovable properties acquired, created, arranged or built by the sponsoring body for the University within the State of Goa shall vest in the University and shall not be used for any purpose other than the academic and research,” the Bill stated.

The Bill seeks to amend sections 16 and 24 of the said Act to include transitionary provisions after the establishment and incorporation of the Private University.
