A worrying spike in deaths among young people across Goa in the ongoing April month has raised serious concerns, with road accidents and drowning incidents emerging as leading causes.

The series of incidents has intensified concerns over youth safety in the state, particularly regarding reckless driving and unsafe swimming practices, prompting calls for stricter enforcement and awareness measures.

In a recent case, a 18-year-old Jesval Diniz from Cacora lost his life in a head-on collision near Ravindra Bhavan. Employed at a hotel in Benaulim, he was returning home after a night shift when his scooter reportedly veered onto the wrong side of the road and crashed into an oncoming tipper truck around 5.15 am on Sunday.

He sustained critical injuries and was shifted from Curchorem Health Centre to Margao District Hospital and later to Goa Medical College, where he succumbed.

In a separate incident, two youths aged between 20 and 22, reportedly from Margao, drowned in the Salaulim canal near Don Bosco School in Quepem after a day outing. Their bodies were spotted floating by a local resident, who noticed a parked motorcycle nearby. Police later retrieved the bodies and sent them for post-mortem.

Another fatality was reported from Sarzora in South Goa, where 27-year-old Wilson Soreng died in a self-accident while returning home after attending Easter Mass.

In yet another drowning case, a 16-year-old student lost his life while swimming in a laterite quarry at Cansaulim.
