Colvale police have arrested a tourist from Jamshedpur in Jharkhand in connection with a hit-and-run incident which claimed the life of a pedestrian in front of the Sirsai panchayat office. The rent-a-car has also been seized in this connection.

According to police, the accused driver Abhishek Manish Verma (28) absconded from the accident site along with the rent-a-car, after Rajendra Chavhan (42) from Mardi, Satara-Maharashtra died on the spot on Wednesday at 3 pm.

A police team investigating the incident found broken pieces of the car’s side mirror and suspected it was a hit-and-run case.

The car was proceeding from Sirsaim to Assnora and after hitting the pedestrian, the driver did not stop to offer help or inform the police, but fled from the accident spot.

Colvale PI Vijay Rane along with his team checked footage of CCTV cameras from Sirsai to Assnora and found that a rent-a-cab was responsible for the accident.

The police were informed that said car was parked in the compound of a hotel. A police team seized the car and arrested the driver Abhishek Verma under Sections 279, 304A and 201 IPC, as well as Section 134 (A) (B) of the Motor Vehicle Act.

Police also found out that the accused was travelling along with his parents and sister at the time of the accident. After the accident, the accused Abhishek Verma took his family to the hotel. He then took the car to Margao and took it to the showroom for repairs, after telling the owner that the car was broken.

The suspect is alleged to have paid Rs 40,000 to the car owner to repair the car and came to the hotel after taking another rent-a-cab car from them. When it became clear that the suspect did this with the intention of destroying the evidence, the police seized the accident car and the other car.
