Even as agitated residents of Navelim have threatened to dismantle the traffic signals at the accident prone Belem traffic junction for want of upkeep and maintenance, senior PWD, National Highway officials claimed the signals at Belem and at Nuvem on the western bypass are not functional after theft of inverter and batteries of the signals by miscreants.
In fact, a senior PWD, NH official informed that the traffic signals at Belem and at Nuvem are not functioning since miscreants stole away the inverter and battery installed to run the unit.
The traffic signal at Belem junction has further suffered major damage after the contractor tried to make the signal functional with a direct connection, burning the entire signal unit.
The Contractor has placed orders for the traffic signal equipment from Gujarat. Once the equipment is received, the contractor will install the same to make the signal functional’, the official said, adding that the PWD has already lodged a complaint of theft with the Margao police over the theft of the inverter and battery of the Belem traffic signal.
