Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar has expressed serious concerns over the sharp increase in minimum land rates in Mormugao taluka, stating that the hike has made land unaffordable for the common man.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour in the Goa Legislative Assembly on Friday, Amonkar urged the government to take immediate steps to rationalise the rates.

“The new minimum land rates are exorbitant, unreasonable, and unfair. This steep hike is severely affecting the common man and making land ownership increasingly difficult,” Amonkar said.

He highlighted that residents of Mormugao taluka are particularly alarmed by the increase, which has drastically pushed land prices beyond their financial reach.

According to Amonkar, the revised rates have witnessed an unprecedented rise ranging between 597 percent and 2857 percent in various parts of Mormugao taluka.

He emphasised that such a drastic surge has made it not only challenging for people to purchase land but also burdens them with hefty stamp duties, further escalating the overall cost of ownership.

The MLA called for a review and rationalisation of the land rates to ensure they remain within a reasonable and affordable range.

He appealed to the government to consider the plight of the common people and implement measures that would prevent the pricing out of local residents from land ownership.

The sharp increase in land rates has sparked widespread concerns among the people of Mormugao, many of whom now find it nearly impossible to invest in property.

Amonkar’s appeal has put the spotlight on the urgent need for a fair and equitable land pricing policy in the State.
