The pandemic has disrupted every aspect of life and has brought restrictions on the movement of all, especially the elderly populace that is advised to stay put in their homes to safeguard them from the Coronavirus. The retired Central and State government employees and beneficiaries who receive a monthly pension after retirement have to provide the life certificate every year in the month of November to continue receiving a pension in his pension account, however, the pandemic had made it difficult for the old or ailing pensioners to visit the bank to submit the life certificate in 2020 and many had to request the bank officials to allow them to speak on the telephone as a proof.

It is to be noted that the senior citizens and retired pensioners, who get their pension in the banks, are supposed to provide life certificate to their respective bank annually, in the months of November/December and for this, these elderly populaces had to be personally present in front of the bank officials as a proof of their living. Offering a breather to the senior citizens and the pensioners from this year onwards, the government has made the procedure of availing the life certificate easier and online. The SBI has informed that the pensioners’ life certificate will now be issued online.

Bypassing this condition, of ‘in-person presence’, the procedure of issuing a life certificate is made easier and online by the government now, states a State Bank of India (SBI) press release. “Senior citizens need not go to the bank for submission of ‘Jeevan Pramaan’ (life certificate) henceforth in the months of November to December, '' says the release.

By just logging in to httpp:jeevanpramaan.gov.in or visiting the Jeevan Pramaan portal and providing Aadhaar number, name, mobile number, PPO number, pension account number, bank details, name of pension sanctioning authority, pension disbursing authority, an OTP will be received on the mobile of the pensioner. After feeding the OTP, within seconds the life certificate will be issued by the website.

For obtaining a life certificate, earlier a pensioner needed to present himself/herself before the Pension Disbursing Agency or had the life certificate issued by the authority where they served and had it delivered to the disbursing agency. This very requirement of personally being present in front of a disbursing agency or getting a life certificate often became a major hurdle in the process of seamless transfer of pension amount to the pensioner.

An external website that opens in a new window seeks to ease this very problem by digitizing the whole process of securing the life certificate. It aims to streamline the process of getting this certificate and making it hassle-free and much easier for pensioners. With this new initiative, the pensioners' requirement to physically present themselves in front of a disbursing agency or the certification authority will become a thing of the past hugely benefiting the pensioners and cutting down on unnecessary logistical hurdles.
