Want to see Goa in a nutshell? Take time off for a trip to Ancestral Goa in the sleepy town of Loutolim in South Goa.
The founders of Ancestral Goa fashioned the place, as an all-you-could-have-seen of Goa of the past, within a few hundred paces, through a series of motifs and symbolic re-creations of lifestyles and customs which existed in the glorious Goa of the past.
Ancestral Goa’s aim was to preserve ancient Goa’s culture, art and environment for posterity. Spread over several acres, Ancestral Goa impresses you right from the time you are ushered into the model village with the performance of the traditional arti.
Littered with precious antiques, artefacts, recreated scenes, mannequins, decorative palanquins, the visitors cannot miss out on the mighty muscled Parshuram, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who mythology has it, carved out Goa from the ocean by shooting an arrow.
Alongside, there is also a museum of crosses, a collection of thousands of crosses collected by the founder of Ancestral Goa Maendra Alvares, over the last several years.
Started in the 1990s, Ancestral Goa also has one of the biggest laterite statues of Sant Mirabai with her tambori stretching up to 15 metres.
