The annual ‘Julus’ procession taken out by the Muslim community on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammed will return to the Margao Municipal garden route this year.

After rounds of meetings between the district authorities and senior police officials, the Jama Masjid, Margao has been granted permission to take out the Julus procession from the Masjid to the Ravindra Bhavan route via the MMC garden on September 28.

After a high-level meeting chaired by South Goa district Collector, Asvin Chandru, Additional Collector, Srinet Kothwale, Deputy Collector, Uday Prabhudesai and police officials led by Sub-divisional Police officer, DySP Santosh Desai, the Jama Masjid has been granted the permission for the old procession route, but with certain conditions.

The number of the four-wheelers participating in the procession has been restricted to 34, with two vehicles for each of the 17 Masjids located in the city and outskirts. The procession will start at around 2.45 pm on September 28 from the Masjid, enter the Hari Mandir road, take the Royal Food road before taking a turn at the Margao Municipal garden to head to the Ravindra Bhavan raid via the old Hospicio.

Chairman of Goa Haji Committee Urfan Babloo told the media that the organisers of the procession will ensure that the rally passes off smoothly without causing any traffic problems in the city. He further said that the organisers will spread the message of love and peace propagated by Prophet Mohammed during the procession.

Urfan thanked Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat and the district authorities and police officials for issuing the permission to hold the Julus procession via the Margao Municipal garden route.

“The CM had spoken to the district Collector on the procession. So also, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat had a meeting with the officials before the authorities approved the MMC garden route,” he said.

He added: “We will abide by the restrictions imposed by the authorities and ensure that the procession moves smoothly along the approved route.”
