In a proactive move to combat vector-borne diseases, the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Bardez, Prathamesh Shankardas, has instructed all 33 village panchayats in the taluka to establish key village committees and conduct cleanliness drives in the run-up to World Malaria Day.

The directives were issued through a memorandum emphasising the importance of preventive measures against mosquito-borne illnesses.

Panchayats have been mandated to form committees focusing on water and sanitation, garbage management, and health, ensuring a coordinated approach to maintaining hygiene in their respective villages.

Additionally, the panchayats have been asked to submit a compliance report to the Deputy Collector by April 7, detailing the formation of the committees and the actions taken under the initiative.

The move follows a recent meeting chaired by Deputy Collector Varsha Parab, where concerns over vector-borne diseases were discussed.

During the meeting, officials highlighted the need for proper waste disposal, particularly of tender coconut shells and other roadside waste, which serve as potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

As a result, panchayats have been directed to organise weekly cleanliness drives with active participation from local residents to curb the spread of diseases.

World Malaria Day, observed on April 25, serves as a global reminder of the fight against malaria and other mosquito-borne illnesses.

With the monsoon season approaching, authorities are ramping up preventive efforts to ensure public health safety.
