After multiple flip-flops, the State government has finally got the approval of the Centre for the site at Rivona-Sanguem to build the permanent campus for the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Goa.
IIT-Goa revealed the approval of the Ministry of Education in a post on 'X' (formerly Twitter) from the institution's official handle.
The Ministry of Education has given its approval to the site proposed by the State Government of Goa located at Malewada, Rivona, Sanguem.
The subsequent task involves completing the necessary formalities for the land transfer. Members of the IIT Goa community are thrilled about this development and eagerly anticipate the upcoming land transfer event. The realisation of the new campus construction is now within reach and is met with great enthusiasm," the statement on 'X' said.
Earlier, the IIT Site Selection Committee had recently visited the site at Rivona and found the nearly 10 lakh square meter area suitable for the campus.
Currently, the State government is in the process of taking possession which could take about a month.
The Rivona panchayat's gram sabha has already passed a resolution supporting the permanent campus for IIT-Goa in the village.
IIT Goa has been operational since 2016 at a temporary campus it shares with the Goa Engineering College at Farmagudi.
The Goa government had identified three sites -- at Loliem-Canacona (where now a film city is being proposed), Melaulim (Sattari) and again in Sanguem -- to construct the IIT campus.
On all three occasions, the move to build the IIT campus was scrapped after protests from locals in the respective areas and pressure from Opposition political parties who alleged a scam in finalisation of the sites.
