The Goa government has officially engaged the services of Dutch firm Deltares as a consultant on a nomination basis for a one-year tenure to study and assess the sand erosion problem faced by several coastal areas of the State.
The state cabinet on Friday approved the deal with Deltares, which will assess the feasibility of executing ‘beach nourishment’ measures using sand motor technology to tackle the erosion.
Deltares is a company from the Netherlands and is linked to a Knowledge Institute there which works to find innovative solutions in water and subsurface.
The ISRO-Ahmedabad ‘Space Application Centre’ had reported that Goa has lost to erosion some 15 hectares of its coastal land over a decade from 2006-16. The threat to the Candolim beach from sea erosion had also been highlighted.
