The Food and Drugs Administration recently took samples of the milk from Goa Dairy and reportedly told the local milk producers to take steps to get rid of the foul smell. FDA even asked them to maintain hygiene in the processing units.
Sources from Goa Dairy said they have come to a conclusion that the foul odour comes from the milk procured from the neighbouring states. “It is evident that farmers from neighbouring states, and particularly from where we procure milk, must be feeding peanuts (after extracting oil) as fodder to the cattle. This is the main reason why foul odour emanates from the milk,” a source from Goa Dairy said.
Presently, Goa Dairy procures 20,000 litres milk from three societies from neighbouring states and procurement from them will be stopped from April 16.
FDA had instructed Goa Dairy to take measures to avoid further public outcry.
In March, Goa Dairy had hiked rates of cow milk by Rs 2, toned milk and standard milk by Rs 3 and full cream milk by Rs 4 per litre. Presently, full cream milk (high fat buffalo milk with 6.0 FAT and 9.0% SNF) cost the customer Rs 55, while pasteurized STD milk (4.5% FAT and 8.5% SNF) cost Rs 46, cow milk (3.5% FAT and 8.5% SNF) cost Rs 42 and toned milk (3.0% FAT and 8.5 % SNF) cost Rs 40. Sources said the new rates initially had an impact, but now it is getting back on track.
