The Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) on Monday issued notices to government authorities and a private builder after suspected water contamination at a residential complex in Dabolim triggered a public health scare affecting over 150 residents.
Notices have been served on the Chief Executive Engineer of the Department of Drinking Water, the Assistant Engineer of the Water Resources Department, and M/s Prabhu Realtor, the developer of Prabhu’s Violetta Complex in Alto-Chicalim. The Commission is scheduled to hear the matter on April 10 at 10:30 am.
The action comes taking cognisance of a complaint by residents of the nearly 200-apartment complex, where more than 150 cases of diarrhoea were reported about a week ago, raising concerns over possible contamination of the water supply.
Residents had also lodged a police complaint against the builder, alleging that untreated sewage was being illegally discharged within the premises, posing a serious risk to public health.
In the aftermath of the outbreak, authorities collected water samples from multiple points, including a residential flat, the underground sump supplying tap water, a swimming pool, and treated sewage lines used for gardening. The Goa State Pollution Control Board also conducted an independent inspection and sampling exercise to ascertain the source and extent of contamination.
