Not just cashew nut, but Goa’s traditional beverage Urrack, Sausages (Chorizo/Choris), Dodol, Kunbi Saree and fabric, Kavi Art and Mussarat Mangoes are awaiting Geographical Indication (GI) tag since September 2023 -- with proposals pending before GI Registry.
All the proposals are currently in “pre-examination’ stage with GI Registry seeking additional information from the nodal agency -- Directorate of Science and Technology. The department had moved the proposals in September-October 2023 seeking GI tag for these traditional Goan food products and beverage and art.
Sources informed that the department is continuously following up with the Registry to fast track the process of granting GI tag; however, there are certain queries raised by the Registry and the same have been answered upon.
While the GI Registry sought to know as to why Urrack qualifies for GI tag, the Goa government responded stating that ‘considering its origin and unique quality with a reputation of more than 350 years’, the beverage, which is a ‘Mother of Feni’ qualifies for GI recognition.
“Brought by the Portuguese, Goa is probably the first home of the Cashew in the Indian subcontinent. It was introduced and nurtured in Goa for more than 350 years. . Hence the application filed for Goa Urrack, Urracca or Uraq qualify as a Geographical Indication considering its origin and unique quality with a reputation of more than 350 yrs,” it said.
The department also informed the Registry that Goan Sausages qualifies for GI as the product was introduced in Goa in the year 1510 by the Portuguese.
“Goan Sausages have a rich history, dating back to the colonial era when the Portuguese ruled Goa, The Portuguese brought with them the art of sausage-making, which was then adapted to the local ingredients and flavours, giving birth to the unique Goan sausages,” it added.
The GI protection is sought for the Goan traditional kaavi art work originated within the Goa State and named after the colour pigment involved called as kaavi in the local Konkani language.
“The art form which was seen earlier in various religious structures is gaining momentum again wherein temples and private buildings are opting for beautifying their buildings with kaavi art work,” the department said.
On the other hand, Goa Kunbi Saree is the famous Goan traditional saree associated with the unique dressing style of the ancient tribe of Goa called as Kunbi. The Saree locally handwoven was worn by the Kunbi and Gawde tribes in Goa who are the original inhabitants.
“This clothing style in Goa by the Kunbi people is centuries old and existed even before the arrival of the Portuguese people in Goa,” the department said.
Till date, Goa has got GI tag for total ten items including mancurad mango, Bebinca, Agassaim brinjal, cashew, seven-sided okra, Moira Banana, Harmal Chillies, Feni, Khola Chillies and Khajem.
