Govt says decision on commencing primary classes may be deferred; Int’l pax arriving in Goa being monitored; people across state urged to get vaccinated; Admin says Central govt guidelines being followed

With the threat of ‘Omicron’, the new Covid variant looming large, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Monday said the government had allowed resumption of classes of only Class VII and VIII while it was monitoring the situation in the changed situation, suggesting that the decision to resume primary classes may be deferred.
Sawant also said that an alert has been sounded at the airport and railway stations and a watch is being maintained on international passengers arriving in Goa.
“Those who have not been vaccinated should do so immediately. About the schools…We have taken a decision only to start classes for Class VII and Class VIII. Other classes, we have not taken any decision but we are monitoring it,” Sawant said while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function in Mapusa.
“A meeting is scheduled with the health and other concerned departments on Tuesday,” he added.
More than a week back, schools across the State had begun offline classes for classes VII and VIII after the government gave a go-ahead to resume physical classes based on the recommendation of the expert committee.
The State government’s expert committee on Covid management, earlier this month, had recommended resumption of schools from classes I to VIII.
The chief minister informed that the State government was strictly following the central government guidelines on Covid management.
He said the entry of all passengers coming from abroad was being monitored and an alert has also been sounded at all passenger entry points.
“An alert has been sounded at the airport, railway stations etc. We will follow the Central government guidelines. We are keeping a watch on international passengers arriving in Goa,” he said.
He also advised Goans to take all precautions especially while dealing with people coming from neighbouring states.
