Goa will contest the assessment of the Mahadayi Water Dispute Tribunal mentioned in its award of August 14, 2018, that the river's basin holds 188.06 TMC of water and will record this objection before the Supreme Court of India which is expected to take the matter up on Wednesday, Goa's Advocate General Devidas Pangam has said.
Pangam, who is steering the State's legal team in the SLP filed to challenge the tribunal's award, said that the quantum of water in the Mhadei basin the tribunal has mentioned in its award is incorrect.
Apart from the challenge to the award, Goa has also listed some other issues which it wants the Supreme Court to adjudicate on, including the notice of Goa's Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife Warden) to the Karnataka government in which work has been ordered to be stopped.
Karnataka has brought this notice and direction before the Supreme Court which is also expected to be heard by the Supreme Court, Pangam added.
The tribunal had allowed Karnataka access to 13.4 TMC of Mahadayi River water for its consumptive use (5.4 TMC) and power generation (8.02 TMC).
Goa was allocated 24 TMC for State’s municipal water needs, irrigation water requirements and industrial water demands while Maharashtra was awarded share of 1.33 TMC for meeting its in-basin needs.
