Goa University (GU) has been ranked 20th in the India Ranking 2016 list of top 100 universities of India released by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) on Monday.

Goa had a score of 69.90 in this first ever domestic educational ranking which was done based on evaluations in higher education in four categories -- Engineering, Management, Universities and Pharmacy. Goa College of Pharmacy secured 23rd position; while in the Engineering category, National Institute of Technology, Goa was ranked at 73rd position.

Five broad generic parameters were followed for ranking of institutions with 100 marks being allotted for each parameter.

While GU managed to secure 100 marks in Graduation Outcome, it scored 63.29 in Teaching, Learning and Resources; 70.81 in Research, Consulting and Collaborative Performance; 76.61 in Outreach and Inclusivity; and 64 in Perception.

Speaking to The Goan, GU Registrar Vijayendra Kamat expressed happiness about GU being ranked 20th among 100 universities in India.

“Goa University is a young university compared to other established universities. And if you look at remaining 19 ahead of us, only four are State universities while the rest are central universities. It is indeed a remarkable achievement”, he said.

He said, “Earlier too, in the NAAC ranking we were given maximum weightage in terms of teaching, learning and resources; as well as the outreach and inclusivity perception and research, especially the professional practice and collaborative performance. So, same trend is reflected in this particular assessment also.”

Speaking about what benefitted GU in the ranking, he said, “AS the NAAC accreditation result came last year, we had lot of data with us. After NAAC accreditation, we added certain processes like institutional repository in terms of publications of all the teachers since last 30 years. This was actually documented and uploaded on the university website. We benefitted based on overall assessment of some of these good administrative as well as academic practices which we were following.”

When asked about where GU can score in the future, he said, “As regards the perception of the institution is concerned, it is a new thing. We have not addressed this particular thing to that extent which is desirable as far as NAAC accreditation is concerned. This is an area where I think we have to focus. Some of the issues pertaining to the professional practices are also a centre theme as far as this ranking is concerned. This has to be consolidated. The Graduation Outcome, which is basically what we expect in terms of graduates is also a challenge. But we are very strong when it comes to teaching learning and resources.”

The only university in the State, Goa University which was established in June 1985 presently has 56 colleges affiliated to it.
