Voices critical of the Union Environment Ministry’s decision to grant Environment Clearance (EC) to enhance the capacity to handle coal and other products in Berths 5A and 6A at Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) are not restricted to the State.

A number of Goans in the UK have also denounced the EC to enhance coal cargo at the MPA and they have been critical of the State government for reneging on its promise to reduce coal cargo in the State.

“In my opinion, the coal project must stop, this is not benefiting the Goan citizens in any way. In fact, it is only going to be worse for all of us as Goa is going to lose its serene atmosphere and beauty. Goa is already experiencing a massive climate change and coal project will only make it worse,” said Alishon Carvalho of Osterley.

Mercy Fernandes of Hounslow claimed this coal project is only filling the pockets of MLAs and created to kill the people of Goa.

“Unfortunately and very sad to say, the Goa government has been heartless towards the Goan people and only thinks of its gains. Coal at two berths is not necessary at all in Goa and it is going to destroy the environment and also health of all the human beings and other species,” said Fernandes.

Added Salvino Soares of Hounslow: “Coal is detrimental to human health, environment and marine life, with numerous studies already proving the irreversible impact it can cause. Goa’s Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had promised that coal handling would not increase and as a matter of fact, it will reduce. The approval and clearances given for additional coal cargo is a tight slap on the double engine government and this proves its failures.”

Delaila Pires of Hounslow said it was sad to hear the increase in the amount of Coal.

“It is surprising that the chief minister is supporting these activities, really disheartened to hear what is happening in Goa.”

Said Lydia Fernandes, also from Hounslow: “It’s a disgrace to betray the Goans. The chief minister had ensured that “Bhivpachi Goroz Na” but today I feel ashamed and low. “Atam bhivpachi goroz asa,” as we are on a suicide mission after handing the control of our heath and environment in the hands of people with vested interests. Coal will destroy the beauty of Goa.”

Olfred Camelo of West Drayton felt “playing games has been the skill adopted by the Goa Government.”

“Divide and rule, silence the people who agitate and many more arrows are fired to kill the voice of Goans. Democracy has been murdered and coal handling permission is another dagger stabbed at the back of the people of Goa,” said Camelo.
