Hundreds of people from across Goa gathered at St Francis Xavier Church in Chicalim on Thursday morning to bid a final farewell to beloved priest, environmentalist, social activist and educator Fr Bolmax Pereira. From early morning, mourners arrived at the church to pay their last respects to a priest who had touched countless lives through his work, humility and deep love for people and nature.
Fr Bolmax’s mortal remains were brought from the GMC to the church at around 7 am. A steady stream of visitors continued throughout the morning. Many stood in silent prayer beside the coffin, while others struggled to hold back their emotions as they remembered a priest who remained closely connected with the people of Chicalim and communities across Goa.
With a large turnout expected, extensive arrangements were made around the church. A huge pandal was erected outside to accommodate mourners attending the funeral Mass, while chairs and screens were provided for those unable to enter the packed church. The gathering reflected Fr Bolmax’s wide influence, with people from Hindu, Muslim and Catholic communities coming together to pay their respects. Many described him as a figure who united people beyond religious and social boundaries.
Traffic and security arrangements were put in place to manage the crowds. Parking facilities were arranged at various locations, while special bus services transported mourners to the church.
A solemn funeral Mass was held at 10 am, after which Fr Bolmax’s mortal remains were taken to his residence in Quepem. The funeral cortege later proceeded to Holy Cross Church for the Eucharistic celebration and final rites.
For many, Thursday’s farewell marked the loss of a guiding force whose faith, social commitment and love for Goa influenced generations.
