Leader of the Opposition, Yuri Alemao, on Wednesday said, he has moved five private member’s resolutions including one that urges the Centre’s External Affairs and Home ministry to expedite the process of granting Indians ‘dual citizenship’.

The other resolutions Alemao has moved involve the issue of the quota of seats in the Goa legislative assembly for Scheduled Tribes (STs) and strengthening of the law against political defections. These resolutions, if listed by Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar, will come up for discussion on Friday February 9.

On the amendment he seeks to the anti-defection law, Alemao has expressed the need of doing away with the concept of “merger” and also to make disputes decided by a Court designated by the Chief Justices of the respective High Court in the case of State assemblies and the Chief Justice of India in the case of Parliament.

On quota in the Goa assembly for STs, Alemao said the government should explore ways and means under provisions of the law to ensure that the Election Commission of India notifies constituencies for STs in Goa. Another resolution of Alemao’s seeks the commemoration of January 16, the day on which the historic Opinion Poll was held in 1967 as ‘Asmitai Diwas’ .

Alemao has also moved again a resolution which seeks banning all cultural practices which are seen as discrimination of widows arguing that the government has done nothing in this regard despite assurances on the floor of the House when a similar resolution of his was discussed in March last year.
