The GSUDA land near the district court complex, Margao has come in handy for the MMC to dispose of green waste, silt and debris in the absence of dedicated space for disposal of such waste.
MARGAO
While there’s a turnaround at Sonsodo, thanks to High Court intervention and directions, the commercial capital is grappling with the issue of disposal of mixed waste, including green and vegetable waste, silt and debris.
In fact, unlike Sonsodo waste dumping site for wet and plastic waste, the city has no dedicated place for the disposal of silt, debris, besides green and vegetable waste. Margao Municipal officials informed that mixed waste, besides debris along with wet and plastic waste was finding its way at the Sonsodo before open waste dumping was banned at the site.
“The MMC has no dedicated site to dispose off mixed waste, including silt and debris. This waste was being dumped on the GSUDA land near the Margao bus stand, before the activity was stopped after the matter was brought to the High Court’s notice. The GSUDA land near the court complex and the SAG acquired property came in handy to dispose of the mixed waste, but the two sites has reached a point of saturation”, remarked a MMC official.
The official added: “Right now, the Civic body has no space for disposal of green and mixed waste. We have set up a plant at Sonsodo to dispose off coconut tree leaves, but the problem still persist for want of dedicated space for dumping of mixed waste”.
