Government departments, including the Water Resources Department, might not have done enough to clear the water hyacinth from the River Sal, but nature is taking action during the monsoon season. As rainwater flows into the River Sal, it’s slowly but surely washing away the weed.

This natural process has begun near the Khareband bridge, where a small section of the river once covered in weed is now clear.

However, there’s concern that the weed might end up in the Arabian Sea and wash onto the beaches along the Goan coast.

The WRD hired a contractor about two weeks ago to clear the River Sal of weed. However, the contractor only cleared the Benaulim side of the river, neglecting the stretch from Khareband bridge to Sirvodem.

Local residents worry that this incomplete job might not help water flow freely during the monsoon season.
