Myth 1: Aphrodisiac qualities

The rise of this myth is suspected to have come from a timewhen the plentiful nutrients in the oyster were eaten by otherwise malnourishedpeople. The vitamin- and mineral-rich food made them feel better and thereforeled to increased sexual activity. But the idea that oysters are a mood-setteris false.

Myth 2: Hot sauce? Really?

Apparently some people put too much stock in the power oftheir favourite hot sauce. The notion that putting hot sauce on a raw oysterwill somehow rid it of any bacteria that could cause illness should bedispelled. The truth is, if the oyster is contaminated with bacteria, the hotsauce will only change the flavour of the food – but it will still make yousick.

Myth 3: Cooking oysters will make them taste better

This is a one of the biggest oyster myths yet. For thesqueamish, it holds a certain appeal, as it enables them to eat an ‘exotic’type of food, while still sticking to the school of thought that says ‘foodmust be cooked’. However, don’t expect your oysters to taste any better justbecause they’ve been swimming in a pool of butter.
