The Agassaim police arrested two persons, including a notorious criminal originally from Bangladesh, late on Monday night as they attempted to burgle a closed house in Firguem Bhat at Goa Velha. The arrest was made after the house owner, currently residing in the UK, provided live CCTV footage to complainant Francisco Pascoal De Sousa, which led to the police action.

North SP Akshat Kaushal informed the media that one of the accused Rustam alias Suhag from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh and originally from Bangladesh, is a habitual offender with a long history of criminal activities in Goa and Delhi. He was released from Tihar Jail on August 6 before allegedly committing this offense with his accomplice Mijanur from Raniganj, West Bengal.

The Agassaim police have registered an offense under sections 305(a) (theft), 331(4) (trespass or housebreaking), 62 (attempting to commit an offense) read with 3(5) (common intention) of the BNS Act. During the investigation, the police seized a Honda scooter and a backpack containing tools used in the crime.

SP Kaushal stated that the accused were subsequently produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class in Panaji and were remanded to one-day police custody.

Rustam had been absconding in a theft case registered at Mapusa police station in 2020. Similar offenses have been registered against him at Ponda, Porvorim, Pernem and Old Goa police stations. In Delhi, he has also been booked for attempted murder and under the Arms Act, among other offenses.
