Quepem group seeks amalgamation of survey holdings

The Adivasi Sangatna Kepem (ASK) on Thursday submitted a memorandum to Deputy Chief Minister and Agriculture Minister Chandrakant Babu Kalvekar, demanding amalgamation of survey holdings and seeking subsidy for all farmers, irrespective of whether they were harvesting manually or with a harvesting machine.

While interacting with Kavlekar in the Quepem Municipal Council hall, the ASK stated that the survey holdings in Goa, particularly those cultivated by tenants/farmers, are not only small but are also segregated. Since the holdings are small and segregated, it becomes uneconomical for the farmers to cultivate them by using modern technology.

To overcome this problem, most tenants/farmers of a particular field have come together, mutually divided the paddy field into “mag” or “patches” and they are now cultivating the same.

This has made agriculture economical as they can use modern technology, but the survey records have remained as it is.

The ASK has demanded that those tenants/farmers who have amalgamated their paddy portions and who wish to record the same in the survey record, be permitted to do so after directives are issued to revenue authorities.

The ASK further stated that the harvesting subsidy is presently given only to those farmers who harvest paddy with harvesting machine, while those farmers who harvest their paddy field manually are not given any harvesting subsidy.

The ASK demanded the inclusion of all farmers in the harvesting scheme, irrespective of whether is done manually or by a harvesting machine.

A copy of the memorandum has also been submitted to the Director of Agriculture and Dy-Collector of Quepem.
