The Raia Sporting Club is focused on providing a platformfor the youth of Raia village to learn and develop their football skills. Thedetermination to help the young boys develop their skills made the managementacquire land for a football field. The talent of the young boys has blossomedover the years and several players have played with some of the big teams inthe state. The team stayed for six years in the first division and embarrassedbig names like Salgaocar football club.
The management has expressed the hopeof sustaining the club’s presence given the increasingly expensive nature ofthe football business. The club is focused on maintaining a competitive edgegiven its past record.
The driving force
In 1957, Peter D'souza, Professor Silvester Fernandes, PedroInacio Pinheiro and Late Pedro Fernandes registered the club with the GoaFootball Association. The players of the club were sons of the soil and playedbare-footed. The club gradually rose from 3rd Division to 2nd Division and thento the 1st Division League conducted by Goa Football Association. The CustodioMemorial Football tournament, the oldest football tournament is organised bythem and is now a regular for clubs from all over Goa.
