Concerned about the rise in crimes around the State and the coastal belt in particular, Goencho Avaaz Party (GAP) along with the residents of Calangute constituency called for strict police patrolling and setting up of police booths in every village so that people in distress can easily contact the authorities in times of emergency.
Submitting a memorandum to the police stations of Calangute, Mapusa and Anjuna police stations, GAP alone with a delegation of people comprising residents from the villages of Candolim-Sinquerim, Calangute-Baga, Arpora-Nagoa and Parra have requested the authorities to take steps to restore safety of the people.
“Police booths must be set up in every village, where people can immediately rush to in the event of an emergency. Police personnel should be assigned in such booths so that they can reach the troubled spots on a matter of priority,” said Roshan Mathias of Goencho Avaaz.
The delegation also demanded daily patrolling of police at all main junctions including random checks of passers-by particularly between 8 pm to 8 am.
“The checks should include personal identification verification and search for arms and ammunition. Appropriate action as prescribed by law should be enforced strictly without bias or nepotism,” the memorandum said.
The delegation also said that police should have information of people residing on any given date and time within their respective jurisdiction.
The residents stressed the need to set up CCTV cameras on main roads and at identified hot spots and by-lanes.
They further demanded adequate staffing of police personnel to meet the requirements of the constituency including women personnel for women-related crimes and issues. “The recent spate of crimes such as rape, murder, gang wars, shoot outs and other anti-social activities that the people of Goa, particularly Calangute and Candolim have been subjected to, is a matter of immense concern,” Mathias said and demanded strict action from the police.
The copies of the memorandum were also submitted to the chief minister and the Director General of Police.
