Students of Don Bosco college of Engineering, Fatorda added another feather to their cap in innovating technical projects as part of their final year academics.
Having conceptualized innovative ideas in the area of robotics, automation, artificial intelligence/machine learning, embedded systems, signal processing, the students have developed successful prototypes for various applications like agriculture, healthcare, 3D printing, condition monitoring, e-commerce/e-learning etc. Many of the projects were sponsored by Goa State Innovation Council and DSTE, Goa.
The department of mechanical engineering has designed and fabricated semi-automated mechanism for cleaning and maintenance of fuel tanks on ships. The department has also come out with innovation in respect of cake making and baking using 3D printing technology.
To tackle diseases infecting coconut plantations, the students have designed and developed a drone for spraying of pesticide on coconut tree. The project is aimed at helping the farmers to cover large number of trees in a shorter duration.
The mechanical engineering section also designed and fabricated a wheelchair cum stretcher as it combines the services of a wheelchair as well as a stretcher into one singular design. The wheelchair can be converted into a full-fledged stretcher.
College Principal, Dr Neena Panadikar pointed out that the department has designed a sanitizing robot to sanitize closed offices, open markets, public areas, hospitals, etc while working remotely without intervention of frontline workers. This project had come in for praise from the Chief Minister and Health Minister. “Our students have devised a 24-hour continuous blood pressure monitoring device to monitor the blood pressure of a patient. Besides, non-invasive body vitalities checking system which can measure many health parameters using a single device non-invasively has also been devised”, she said, adding that a library management robotic system has been designed to minimize human effort in the library due to large crowds and large number of books.
The Principal said the college future plan is to try to have its own Start Up policy, adding that the college has applied for national accreditation. We are also trying to have a PhD centre at the campus.
Director, Don Bosco College of Engineering, Fr Kinley D’Crus said the college encourages youngsters to creative and to think out of the box, expressing satisfaction that the concept has started bearing fruit on the college campus. “We have the Goa State Innovation Council and our own incubation centre, which have helped our students to think differently”, he said adding that the college not only encourages the students to think differently, but make sure these project see the light of the day.
