Scholarship push to unearth Goa’s archaeological heritage

State to award four 24-month fellowships in the field

The State government has announced a fellowship for undertaking research activities in the field of Archaeology of Goa and the West Coast.

The Department of Archaeology has notified “The Goa Archaeological Research Fellowship Scheme”, under which four research fellowships will be awarded—two at Junior level and two at Senior level—for research in the specified area for 24 months. The researchers will be paid a monthly remuneration of Rs 25,000 (junior) and Rs 40,000 (senior) for a period of two years.

The scheme aims to encourage scholars to undertake research on the Archaeology of Goa based on primary archaeological sources and to promote interdisciplinary research in colleges, universities, and other educational research organisations.

The department also intends to create a database of the archaeological heritage of Goa. “Through the research, the unexplored archaeological treasure will be brought to light, which will help to carry out further research in the field of Archaeology of Goa,” the notification stated.

Under the scheme, any individual who has completed her/his Post-Graduation in M.A. in Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology/M.A. in History/M.A. in Indology and is up to 35 years of age as on the closing date of application will be eligible to undertake research in the junior category.

Under the senior category, the candidate must hold a Doctorate in Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology/History/Indology and should be up to 45 years of age.

As per the scheme, the fellowship shall be awarded to any scholar only once in her/his lifetime, and they will not be eligible for any other fellowship offered by the Department in any other category for a period of five years from the date of submission of her/his project.
