In a shocking incident, a man got an electric shock after an underground power line got damaged in the Mapusa market and current began to leak into the water on the road near the Shakuntala statue on Monday night.

The electricity department later disconnected the power supply in the market.

The incident was reported at about 8 pm, when a person who was going to a shop near the statue of Shakuntala received an electrical shock. The concerned shopkeepers then alerted the electricity department.

Electricity department workers inspected the area and found the underground power cable to have been damaged. After confirming that the current had been leaking on the wet road, the electricity workers switched off the electricity supply in the market.

The incident prompted the business community to suspect that substandard equipment had been used for the underground power lines. They claimed that a few days ago, a cow had been electrocuted in the market.

“During this festive occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, the market will be abuzz with traders and customers. The electricity department should thoroughly check the underground power lines and equipment and ensure that the market is safe,” said Siddhesh Raut, general secretary of the Mapusa Merchants Association.

When contacted, Electricity Department Executive Engineer Subhash Parsekar said a proper investigation will be conducted into the current which leaked on the road at Mapusa market.
