St Savio Sports Club, Calangute edge past St Augustus Sports Club, Pomburba 2-1 to seal a berth in the quarter-final of North Goa McDowell's N0 1 Yaari Premiere Cup inter-village football tournment organized by Anjuna Gymkhana at Anjuna Gymkhna grounds, on Wednesday. St Savio Sports Club led 2-0 at the breather.
Both the teams started with great intent.However it was St Savio Sports Club,who got the better of St Augustus Sports Club as the match progressed. St Savio Sports Club's breakthrough came in the 21st minute when striker Vishal Vaigankar beat the rival goalkeeper with a neat finish off a well-measured cross from Deep Govekar.
With the momentum on their side, St Savio Sports Club players started to express themselves as they made inroads into the opposition box.
Their persistence paid off when Charles Dias received a cross from Ashley Lobo on the flank and stabbed it in the opposition goal to help his team go into the break with a two-goal lead.Post resumption, St Savio Sports Club continued to dictate terms and fired a couple of shots against the rival citadel. Down by 0-2, St Augustus Sports Club continued to attack the rival goal.
St Augustus Sports Club scored the consolation goal in the 44th minute following a flag-kick taken by Amar as striker Ashvek Mulgaonkar's smart header kissed the cross bar and eluded the rival goalkeeper.
The equaliser boosted the morale of Pomburba players as they went all out in search of the equalizer but St Savio Sports Club defenders stood tall in protecting their slender lead.
In the South Goa match, CRC, Chinchinim beat Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim 2-1 to enter the quarter-finals at Government Village School playground, Cuncolim on Wednesday. There was no score at lemon-break
Both the teams displayed attacking brand of soccer. However as the match progressed,CRC took over the reigns and pressurised the rival citadel. CRC nearly broke the deadlock when Vicky Fernandes intelligently picked the ball from his own half and seeing the rival goalkeeper out of his position, he flicked the ball only to see rival defender Brandon Luis effecting a goalline in the 22nd minute. After some minor hiccups, Cavelossim regrouped quickly and took the fight to the rival camp when Rohan Mueller tried to find a breakthrough however rival defender Domingos Rebello thwarted him from scoring with neat tackles.
Crossing over, CRC were a dominant side with their forwards in their elements and troubled the rival defence with well orchestrated raids.CRC broke the deadlock in the 47th minute when Adriel D'Costa unleashed a fine shot that beat the Cavelossim goalkeeper hands down.
The success boosted CRC to mount more s pressure on the rival goal and in the process Merilo Ferrao scored the insurance goal in the 57th minute with a stiff shot. Down 0-2, Cavelossim went all out and fired on all cylinders and seven minutes before the long whistle Rohan Muller scored the consolation goal.
With time running out, Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim had a chance to neutralize the lead but their forwards wasted from close range.
