The Tourism Department has decided not to continue with the controversial beach cleaning contracts and instead float new tenders through the GSIDC.

He said that the new contractors will continue to rhave the responsibility of setting up dustbins along the beaches, rcollecting garbage and maintaining cleanliness along the beaches in the rState but will no longer have to set up composting stations or cabins ralong the beaches to dispose wet waste. Earlier, Parulekar had said rthat the monitoring committee was exploring the possibility of scrappingr the contract especially after the Lokayukta decided to take cognizance rof complaints filed before it alleging a scam. The Lokayukta had rasked the government to keep on hold payments to the contractor in the rbeach cleaning contracts while the case was being heard and the rgovernment as directed to file its replies in response to the case filedr by Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte and RTI activist Aires

The Goa Lokayukta had earlier directed to conduct a rdetailed investigation into the alleged beach cleaning scam while also rdirecting the State government to decide within six weeks whether or notr to renew the contractors licenses. “It has been decided to hold a rdetailed investigation. The State government is required to take an rappropriate decision within six weeks relating to renewal/non renewal ofr the contract on the basis of all available relevant materials includingr the notes of different authorities pertaining to the performance of ther contractors for the relevant period,” Lokayukta Justice P K Misra rsaid.Earlier, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo as well as CM Parsekar had rsuggested that the contracts be refloated in view of the various issues rsurrounding the contracts.
