Suspended cop, 2 others held in ` 34 lakh heist

Crime Branch of Goa Police on Monday arrested three persons including suspended police constable Vikas Naik and alleged conspirators Vinit Shet and Pritesh Mayekar in connection with the robbery of Rs 34 lakh in new currency in Saligao.

The amount was looted by accused Vinit Shet and Pritesh Mayekar in connivance with others. Shet and Mayekar had been absconding ever since. Crime Branch has previously arrested four accused including Antonio Paulo D’Cruz, Sameer Satardekar, Raju Maithi and Siddhesh Fatarpekar in connection with the offence. The amount of Rs 34 lakh was looted from the complainant Altaf Iqbal Memon from Maharashtra. 
Memon had arrived in Goa along with two friends from Kudal, Maharashtra with the plan of exchanging the amount for Rs 44 lakh in old notes on the night of December 12. Police constable Naik attached with Mapusa Police station was suspended December 15, 2016, pending inquiry owing to suspicion over his involvement in the robbery in Sangolda.
On being questioned by top cops about his presence at the spot of the offence, PC Naik had claimed that that he had prior information about the illegal exchange of new currency, which was scheduled and that he had alerted Saligao Police in 
this regard. 
 Crime Branch inspector Dattaguru Sawant, Sub Inspector Laxi Amonkar along with a head constable and a constable are investigating the matter under the supervision of Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch) 
Umesh Gaonkar.
