Rescue carried out despite lack of boats, basic equipment

Talpona Coastal Police Station PI Theron D’Costa and a police team get into a private boat at the Talpona Jetty to conduct the search and rescue of four fishermen who had gone missing at sea on Tuesday.
Talpona Coastal Police Station PI Theron D’Costa was widely praised by the fishing community for managing the rescue of four fishermen who had been reported missing in the sea for many hours.
Local fishing leaders claimed that even though the Talpona Coastal Police Station was not equipped with the required facilities, PI D’Costa was quick to assess and attend to the emergency.
PI D’Costa, two PSIs and a constable engaged a private boat and went into the sea at about 1 pm and conducted the search operation for over 5 hours, before returning with all four missing fishermen and their fishing boat at about 6.45 pm.
Such was their appreciation that the fishing community burst into cheer and applause for PI D’Costa and his team when they returned with the four fishermen at the Talpona Jetty.
“We had approached PI D’Costa and informed him about the situation, and he really helped us in every possible manner and finally, he himself brought all our missing fishermen to the Jetty, informed Rudresh Namshikar, a fishing leader.
Anil Keluskar was critical of the poor facilities at the Talpona Coastal Police Station.
“The Talpona Coastal Police Station must be given boats. The government is building big police stations, but it does not provide them with the required facilities and equipment to run those police stations, what will the police do? Under the circumstances, PI D’Costa and his team did exceedingly well,” said Keluskar.
Another fishing leader, Pankaj Namshikar, said PI D’Costa deserved full praise for bravely venturing into the sea during the search and rescue operation of the missing fishermen.
“Everyone congratulated PI D’Costa and his team for their brave act. He didn’t look back to see what equipment was present or absent at the Talpona Coastal Police Station. He quickly arranged whatever boat he could manage and he along with two PSIs and a constable bravely ventured into the sea in search of our missing fishermen. We thank him and all the police staff of the Talpona Coastal Police Station,” said Pankaj Namshikar.
